Elizabeth May @ VSHJ

At a well attended opening meeting VSHJ members and guests were treated to an enthusiastic address and discussion with Elizabeth May, MP, OC and Leader of the Green Party of Canada.

Ms. May told stories of her many battles on behalf of environmental causes, her efforts in the House of Commons on behalf of her constituents and views on ways to improve the democratic process in Canada on behalf of all Canadians. The central message of Ms. May’s address was that individuals can make a difference. Her own experiences (from the age of 7!) prove the truth of this philosophy.

We would like to thank Ms. May for taking time in her extremely busy schedule to address our group. Attendees were inspired and energised by her openness, dedication and intelligence.

VSHJ Member Honoured

Long time VSHJ member Freda Knott was honoured on Friday, September 7th receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Royal Jubilee Medal from Denise Savoie, MP. The Diamond Jubilee Medal recognizes Canadians of all ages for outstanding contributions to their community and country.

“I am proud to recognize the contributions of these individuals who have helped make Victoria the most liveable city in Canada,” Savoie said of the event, which also marked her last day in office, and last activity as MP before stepping down.

In addition to her role as a board member of VSHJ, Freda has been a peace activist most of her life, learning from her parents who were in the peace movement. She joined VOW in 1967 and became an active member immediately. She was a founding member of the Greater Victoria Disarmament Group in early 80’s. This became a very large, well known and active peace organization in the area. She became the V.I. representative to the CPA steering committee in its early years. In 1993 Freda became a Raging Granny, deciding that it was time to have fun while doing her protesting. She is also on the Board of the Victoria Chapter of the Council of Canadians.

Freda’s honour was recognized at our season opening meeting with a brief address by our Ceremonial Leader, Sharon Kobrinsky and was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Way to go Freda!
